At C.P.Backhurst & Co Ltd we realise that you only get out what you put in, so it is important for us to make our Topsoil out of choice material.
None of our soils are sourced from skip waste.
Good Topsoil is a blend of Sand, Silt, Clay and Organic matter. Each on it's own would be ineffective. Sand and silt although free draining, does not hold nutrients effectively, where as Clay has the opposite effect.
In heavy soil areas, after periods of wet weather, you may find your garden saturated. As it begins to dry out it is advisable to fork it over to stop a crust forming. You will then find it beneficial to dig in compost, as nutrients may have been washed away, and then cover with mulch to protect it during dry conditions.
